Scoring

Point Systems

These systems are used to calculate the Net Run Rate, decide in cases of Ties and for preventing those above from being implemented.

Universal Method of Scoring.

The Bowling Section of the Scoring Record

The Over
  • Always record the balls in the over in the same sequence in the overs box
The Over
1     2     3 1     3     5 1     2 1     4
4     5     6 2     4     6 3     4 2     5
    5     6 3     6
  • All balls bowled must be entered
  • If the umpire gives a 7 ball over record a 7 ball over
  • If there are only 5 deliveries in the over that is all you should record
  • A Maiden over is a complete over by a single bowler in which there is no score against that bowler. The dots should be joined together to form an "M".
  • A Maiden over cannot contain Wides or No balls
  • An accidental 5 or 7 ball over is a completed over when counting up the number of overs bowled. As a completed over, it can be a Maiden over
  • A part over for any other reason can never be a Maiden over
  • If a wicket falls with credit to the bowler enter a "w" for that delivery
  • If a wicket credited to the bowler falls in a Maiden over it becomes a Wicket Maiden Join dots and "w" together to form a "W"
  • Numerals are used only for runs made when the ball has been struck by the bat

Byes and Leg Byes

  • Can be entered as a dot but it is better to use a symbol.
Byes and Leg Byes
Byes Triangle, point upwards Bye
Leg Byes Triangle, point downwards Leg Bye
  • Runs made as byes or leg byes are recorded in the appropriate line of fielding extras.

Wides and No Balls

  • Under Softball Cricket Laws of Cricket a one run penalty is awarded for a No ball or a Wide in addition to any other runs made
  • All Wides and No balls count against the bowler in the bowling analysis
  • An over containing a Wide or a No ball cannot be a maiden over
  • A Wide or a No ball is not a fair delivery and does not count as a ball in the over. Another ball will be allowed to give six fair deliveries in the over - allow room in the over box for more than 6 deliveries
  • An over which, because of Wides or No balls, has 8 deliveries is recorded in the sequence below:
1 7 4
2 8 5
3   6
  • If a wicket falls when a Wide ball or No ball has been bowled and there are no other runs, record the 1 run penalty before entering the score at the fall of the wicket

No Ball

  • The score-sheet entry for a No ball delivery is a circle - No Ball
  • The one run penalty PLUS runs made otherwise are scored
  • If no runs other than the penalty are scored there is no entry within the circle
  • When runs are scored as extras from a No ball, one dot is entered within the circle for every run scored. The one run penalty for the No ball PLUS any other runs scored are all recorded in the horizontal No ball extras row
  • When runs from the bat are made off a No ball, the numerical value of the runs is entered within the circle. The one run penalty for the No ball is recorded in the horizontal No ball extras row. The runs scored off the bat are credited to the striker
  • A wicket credited to the bowler is not possible off a No ball

Wide Ball

  • The scoring record entry for a Wide delivery is a cross Wide Ball
  • A one run penalty is scored
  • The one run penalty PLUS runs made otherwise are scored
  • If no runs other than the penalty are scored there is no other entry with the +
  • If runs are scored as byes a dot is entered in the "+" for each run made
  • The one run penalty for the Wide delivery PLUS any other runs made are recorded in the Wide extras row of the scoring record
  • A numeric entry with a wide symbol is impossible as a Wide ball cannot be hit
  • A wicket credited to the bowler is possible off a Wide ball (Stumped and Hit wicket)

The Number of No Ball and Wide Ball Deliveries

  • A '1' is entered in the vertical columns at the end of the bowling analysis for each Wide or No ball delivery
  • These columns are for the number of deliveries and not the score from that delivery
  • The bottom space is used to record the total No ball and Wide deliveries bowled by each bowler

Bowlers

  • When a bowler completes a spell of bowling draw a vertical line after his last over (using the color selected for the Bowler who replaces him)
  • If a bowler is suspended draw a thick horizontal line through the remainder of his analysis to show that he cannot bowl again in the innings
  • Use the color selected for the replacement bowler

Other Symbols Used

  • Underlining: Use _ under any entry in the batting and bowling sections of the score-sheet to indicate that the batsmen are not at the end indicated by the score
This may arise after short runs or a batsman out caught having crossed before the catch was made
  • "R" over a dot or numeral to indicate a run out

Summarize the Bowling

  • Complete the total number of overs, maidens, runs and wickets for each bowler at the end of the innings
  • If an over is incomplete each fair delivery in the part over is expressed as 0.1 ball
  • Calculate and record the number of no ball and wide deliveries, the total number of balls bowled and the average for each bowler
  • Total these figures to provide a summary of balls, overs, maidens, runs and wickets for the entire innings
